No Sweat Regatta Report and Results
October 4-5 2003
By Michael Ehnis Sunfish #2335

This years Laser and Sunfish regatta at Portage Yacht Club lived up to its moniker with temperatures hovering around 50 on Saturday, winds blowing in the 20’s, windchills in the 30’s. and water temps in the upper 50’s. It certainly could have been considered a fashion show as everyone donned as much protective clothing as they could comfortably wear and still sail their boat. There were plenty of spectacular winter hats on display from many of the competitors and especially from the PRO and club Commodore Craig Kivi. His Russian looking hat set the tone and the mind set for all the participants.

Four races were held Saturday with a hot lunch break in between. The occasional Portage Lake windshift caused the committee to move the windward mark to prevent legs from becoming a horse race. With two services boat employed this happened without any glitches. Triangular courses ruled so competitors could enjoy the frequent planing condtions. By the time the racing concluded on Saturday afternoon many of us had taken our final swim of the year (including yours truly) which made derigging our boats quite challenging with our ice cold hands.

Sunday brought the total opposite in term of wind for the final three races. Sometimes it was there and sometimes it wasn’t. Sometimes it filled in from the left and other times the right. Those who got their heads out of the boat (the leaders in each fleet) managed to sail the course as though there was a steady wind much to the blank stares of us who were trying to figure it all out.

The race concluded with a social hour in the park with plenty of good food including Bratwurst, hot baked beans, chips, cookies, apples and plenty of liquid refreshment. Congratulations to Chad Coberlly in the Laser and Derrick Fries in the Sunfish for their outstanding sailing in all conditions as well as their consistency. We look forward to next years event.
